Application Process & Interviews at GHD Australia

I applied via an online portal, completed an online interview and then a face to face interview before being hired

Questions based on learning, improving and simple tasks were asked. I also used my portfolio of my work at University to demonstrate my skills and capabilities.

Video interview, followed by face to face interview

I had undertaken work experience with the team before I began, and so underwent a fairly extensive day to day interview process. A lot was about assessing whether I was a good fit for the team.

I started as a work experience student. After doing about 6 weeks of work experience, I got offered an interview.

The interview was amazing. We talked about both our passions and how GHD can help me grow and bring me on an adventure.

Application with written questions to answer, face-to-face interview with members of the team you are to join and finally an assessment centre with a psychometric test, group task and an interview with a member of the people team

I was interviewed for a vacation student position (intern). I applied online, then had to undertake an assessment centre that included an online cognitive test, group dynamic assessment and an individual assessment.

One-on-one interview, group interview and online assessment.

The various levels of the interview process was excellent. I particularly enjoyed the group activity. We were given a scenario and had to work together in a team amongst people from different disciplines, which reflects our work environment.

Started as a vacation student - assessment centre followed by one-on-one interview. Didn't have to reapply as a grad, worked casually at the company through final year of uni then transitioned to a full time grad.

Weren't any assessments, just a couple of rounds of interview. As I applied to a different state to the one I was in the interviews were all though a web camera.

A group interview with around 25 people, proceed by an individual interview.

1st Round - Face to Face interview, 2nd Round - Face to Face interview, group activity and psychometric test.

Interviews are relaxed and interviewers were very warm and welcoming

There were many stages, which was a little annoying but understandable. Having to give long answers to questions was more annoying than shorter responses.

For my role, the process was very different to most of the other graduates. I simply had an interview, which included an hour to do a small assessment.

I think the interview with your potential team leader and young professional is a great setup, and the best way to get to know your future team. The interviews with HR and group interviews are always very forced and not a good representation of what it is like to work at this company.

Generic standard - what is the greatest challenge you've faced etc. from HR - more specific discussion from team leader. Not enough questions about what level I want to be professionally over time.

I was asked about my five year plan, and why I particularly wanted to work for this business specifically.

Why GHD? Favorite subjects at Uni? Least favorite subject? Why do you want to be an engineer? Explain situations where you have demonstrated good teamwork etc.

Fairly standard interview questions I suppose. - What my values were - how i displayed certain characteristics and dealt with situations - interests outside of work - questions related to past work and university

Questions mainly focused on how I had dealt with pressured situation, how I had dealt with criticism of my work and how I had improved it. Interests and hobbies out of work and simple questions like what would you do on your first day

Work experience Career goals general questions regarding my degree etc

Why Civil Engineering and not another discipline? What is your passion etc. What do you want to gain from GHD...

I was asked predominantly behavioural questions

I can't remember specifically but they were mainly around how I had resolved issues in previous work and when working with real-life clients during university assignments.

Strengths and weaknesses, company values, overview of yourself

Project experiences, interests, strengths

They asked about what I studied, what my favourite aspects of my degree where. They also asked me straight up if i was happy to travel, work remotely and to be on site most of my time so it was not a surprise when I started work.

Why did I apply to the role. What do I know about the company. What has been my experience to date.

I was asked about my interests, previous work experience, my research and studies and what I see myself doing in the near and far future.

In the final interview I was asked half personality questions/questions about me, and half technical questions regarding the fundamentals of structural engineering. I enjoyed the latter half more as I feel my brain is more geared to answer those types of questions, and felt like myself while answering them. The former tends to feel unnatural/artificial while answering.

Why do you want this job? What experience do you have? Why GHD? Tell us about an experience you have had in a team where things didn't go to plan, how did you help to fix this? Bring in a work sample and discuss it.

Questions about teamwork, problem solving, conflict resolution and technical experience.

A few about 'how I act in the workplace', as well of examples of lateral thinking, teamwork and leadership.

Behavioural and situational questions

Why did you want to get good marks at uni?

Definitely research the company before applying and not just to get information on the company (This should be the first simple step you shouldn't need to be told) See if it would be a place where you would want to work. Reference any of the work that they have done and say why you like it. It shows you're actually interested in the company and not just looking to get any job

I think try and relax and be yourself, as a personality fit is so important.

You want to sound natural in your interview but come prepared with some examples where you have demonstrated your strengths.

Research the company Think about the questions typically asked i.e. about company values google some questions and start to think about how you would answer them

Be yourself. And truly live your passion.

Practice answering behavioural questions and include experiences from different jobs/aspects of your life.

Be genuine in expressing which area you are interested in when applying. Clearly articulate why you want to work in the particular field and back it up with relevant examples.

Don't over prepare, just be yourself. It is not always about marks and achievements, it also about you as a person. Also just accept you will be the best dressed person in the interview. You are being hired by engineers.

Show that you are motivated to learn and work hard. Demonstrate that you can be flexible and proactive.

Prepare by getting to know what the company values. Have a look at the news and insights page on the website and pick a couple of things of interest you and ask about them during your interview. Show that you are interested in the company. Finally, try and gather as much information about what your day to day role will be, and really think about whether you can see yourself doing and enjoying that for a long time - you don't need to rush into the first offer you get.

I would recommend that they keep positive, confident and enthusiastic about joining the workforce. It helps to be a good communicator, even when speaking about your own interests. Try not to bore the interviewers with stories that you don't enjoy or find valuable yourself.

Practical experience on your resume is helpful. Read about the company and the kind of projects they are involved in in your discipline. Have questions you'd like to ask

Talk to relevant experience, highlight the GHD focus on safety and client focussed outcomes.

Research the company's values and objectives, and understand how you would fit within the company

Be yourself! Prepare for the interview by practicing interviewing questions and even with a friend.

Prepare for usual interview questions, and assessment centre if applicable

Strong time management including competing priority prioritising

Brush up on the fundamentals/basics of whatever discipline you are entering. For example if you are applying for a structural engineering job make sure you know how to draw bending moment/shear force diagrams for determinate structures.

Don't be too stressed and be genuine. My interview went badly (was via skype/webex and connection failed 3 times) and i still got an offer based on the answers i provided
